Red Deer: Marylebone Townhouse
International studio Red Deer designed the interiors for an apartment in a Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse located in Central London.
International architecture and interior design studio Red Deer design the interiors for a two-storey apartment within an impressive 18th-century Georgian townhouse located in London's affluent Marylebone neighbourhood. Built in 1750, the two-bedroom property is comprised of a ground-floor open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, bathroom, master bedroom with ensuite and an outdoor terrace. On the upper first-floor is a second bedroom overlooking the terrace.
The studio stripped the interiors of the property back to its shell, exposing layers of history, beginning with the property’s Portland Estate 1750s layout, which underwent alterations in the early 19th century. Reconfiguring the layout further, Red Deer removed the apartment’s bathroom and cloakroom and narrowed the hallway in order to accommodate two smaller bathrooms, one being ensuite to the master bedroom. Additionally, the kitchen was reoriented to create an open-plan social kitchen and dining space for entertaining.
Original Jacobethan mouldings and new-classical plasterwork create a beautiful marriage of styles, all carefully and meticulously restored by the studio. Period fireplaces were sourced and reinstalled, along with reclaimed Douglas Fir floorboards, creating a 'new heritage' for the home, dressed against a soft yet defining colour palette of whites and greys. The subtle tones accentuate the clean lines and luxurious finishes within the apartment, allowing for accessories and details to shine while creating a calm and collected atmosphere.

Undertaking a mammoth task, Red Deer has created a luxurious and contemporary apartment design that not only respects the original fabric and style of the property but introduces a unique and characterful identity. The delicate balance of colour and material help the property feel fresh and uncluttered while the layering of textures and selection of vintage and one-off furniture pieces create a real home to be lived in and cherished.
