Superblue & BMW i present Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: “Pulse Topology”
During the 2022 edition of Design Miami in Basel, Switzerland, Superblue & BMW i present Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s work ‘Pulse Topology’ an interactive piece that changes as it measures participant’s heartbeats.
A highlight of the art and design season, Basel draws crowds from Europe and beyond with its editions of Art Basel and Design Miami. For this edition of Design Miami, the fair teamed up with Superblue and BMW i to present an immersive and interactive installation by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer titled ‘Pulse Topology’. Consisting of 6,000 light bulbs suspended in waves above visitors’ heads, the installation features four pulse readers, segregating the works into four sections, each able to measure a participant’s pulse to adjust the brightness and rhythm of the lights. Inspired by conversations with BMW engineers and designers, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and his studio used the same technology in 'Pulse Topology' as it used to activate the BMW i7's interior, with a visitor's heartbeat tangible in light, sound, and graphics. This relationship is shown as an extension of the i7's use of light to create a meaningful connection with its driver. The all-electric sedan demonstrates how an exclusive driving experience and the ultimate feeling of onboard well-being can marry sustainability and digitalization. A human-centred approach to using light both in the exterior and interior also shapes the individual experience. The iconic kidney grille and crystal headlights glimmer when the driver approaches their car and a light carpet is revealed upon opening the door. The vehicle's interior illuminates in different scenarios selected by the driver according to the mood they wish to immerse themselves in: Relax, Expressive, or Sport.
